There are many reasons why some women won’t screen for breast cancer.
Fear, language barriers, religious beliefs, cultural reasons.
Early detection is vital to cancer prevention and breaking through these barriers is critical to ensuring as many women as possible screen.
My brief was to photograph the screening procedure in order to demonstrate how simple the process is. The images would then be used to educate women in the screening process.
The camera can be very intrusive and without a relationship of trust between myself and the sitter the work can lack integrity and honesty. I am very grateful to these women who permitted me to photograph them as they went through this very personal screening experience. I hope through the use of these photographs in BreastScreening Victoria’s educational collateral, fears about the screening process may be put to rest and more women will participate in this very important step towards early detection of breast cancer.
A huge thank you to all the brave women who participated in this project.
